Immediately to the east is Voyageur Island which is an undeveloped island preserved as a camping and hiking destination only accessible by paddling. To the west is the mainland of Sault Ste Marie. This gives you direct access out to the St Marys River which is regarded as some of the best fishing in the Midwest if not the country. The St Marys is known for walleye, steelhead, and salmon but also has great perch fishing. Muskie, Pike, and bass are also common. Bass fishing seems to be very entertaining with low pressure. It also gives you boat access to Lake Superior and Lake Huron. The St Marys is river but being almost 50 miles across and 75 miles long with many many islands and inlets spanning two countries it functions more like a large lake. This is a private island with only one owner; you are not sharing it with anyone. This island is just a short 10 minute boat trip (depending on traffic) from 2 different launches but you can paddle from Rotary Island Park in probably half that.
