Gilbert later went on to many successes in real estate and community development; he served on the commission for the Port of Astoria, is the builder and namesake of Seaside's Historic Gilbert District, built what is now the Gilbert Inn Hotel, donated the land that became Seaside's oceanfront Promenade, and eventually became the mayor of Seaside.
